About

My name is Autumn Painter, I am a doctoral candidate at Michigan State University in the Department of Anthropology. My research focuses on the intersection of foodways and coalescence through the analysis of animal bones in the Midwestern United States. I also served as the Campus Archaeologist for Michigan State University from May 2018 - August 2020.

  • Archaeological Beginnings

As an elementary student in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, I attended the Youth Archaeology Workshop hosted by the Hiawatha National Forest and Illinois State University. This program provided me hands-on archaeological experience that initiated my passion for the subject and has led me to this field.

    Fellowships

Collections, Cultural Heritage & Campus Archaeology

I have received several fellowships through MSU including the Cultural Heritage Informatics fellowship and the Campus Archaeology Program fellowship. I have been a returning fellow for both, allowing me to further expand my research and skills in these areas, including digital scholarship, public outreach, and historical archaeology. From the CAP fellowship, I served as the Campus Archaeologist for MSU for over two years. I have also held an internship at the Michigan State University Natural Science Collections.

  • Current Research

    Faunal Analysis

My dissertation research uses faunal analysis expand anthropological understandings of how animal exploitation intersects with the broader process of coalescence. It specifically approaches the context of coalescent communities by looking at social interactions and community building through a theoretical framework of foodways.
